February has a reputation for being gray, quiet, and a little sleepy. Preservation Parks of Delaware County is clearly having none of that.

Across Gallant Farm, Deer Haven Park, Shale Hollow, Hogback Ridge, and more, this month’s calendar reads like an invitation to step outside, try something new, and see familiar places in a different way. The programs are practical, creative, educational, and just plain fun. They’re also thoughtfully spread across ages, from toddlers to retirees, making the parks not just a backdrop for nature but a gathering place for the community in the middle of winter.

Here’s what’s waiting out there.

Winter Challenges That Stretch the Season

Two ongoing activities set the tone for the entire month.

From December 13 through March 15, the Winter Letterbox program turns park visits into a quiet treasure hunt. At various parks, participants search for hidden letterboxes, collecting stamps and exploring along the way. It’s self-guided, low pressure, and a reason to keep coming back when the trails are dusted with snow or softened by late winter mud.

Meanwhile, the Winter 100 challenge, running January 1 through March 31, encourages participants to log 100 miles outdoors anywhere. It’s a simple idea with powerful motivation. Walk the trails, circle your neighborhood, or mix both. The parks provide the spark, and the miles can happen wherever you are.

Both require registration, and both turn February from a waiting period into an active season.

Mornings in the Parks: Movement and Mindfulness

Early February brings opportunities to start the day outside in ways that are restorative rather than hurried.

On Saturday, February 7 at 10:00 AM, Yoga and Hike at Shale Hollow Park combines gentle movement with time on the trail for ages 15 and up. It’s a reminder that winter woods can be peaceful in a way summer never quite manages.

Later in the month, on Saturday, February 21 at 10:00 AM, Music in Our Nature Era at Deer Haven Park invites all ages to explore the sounds of the outdoors in a creative, interactive way.

These aren’t high-energy workouts. They’re invitations to slow down and notice.

Programs for Young Explorers

Families with young children have several reasons to bundle up and head out.

On Wednesday, February 11 at 10:00 AM, Little Adventurers at Deer Haven Park is designed specifically for children ages 5 and under. It’s hands-on, age-appropriate, and built to turn curiosity into discovery.

On Monday, February 16 at 10:00 AM, School’s Out: Winter Series at Deer Haven Park provides a structured, engaging outdoor activity for ages 5 and up on a day when school is not in session.

These programs meet kids where they are, using the outdoors as a classroom without ever feeling like a lesson.

Creative and Cultural Gatherings

The parks also become places for conversation, craft, and shared interests.

On Sunday, February 8 at 1:00 PM, The Bees Knees Stitching Circle at Gallant Farm invites ages 12 and up to bring needlework, learn from others, and enjoy time together in a historic farm setting.

On Sunday, February 22 at 2:00 PM, the Gallant Farm Literary and Cowpie Society blends reading, discussion, and a bit of humor in a program for ages 12 and up that feels as much like a book club as a park program.

And for those who love birds, the Delaware County Bird Club meets at Deer Haven Park on Monday, February 23 at 7:00 PM, open to all ages.

These gatherings show that parks are as much about people as they are about trails and trees.

Evenings After Dark: Lanterns and Owls

Some of February’s most memorable programs happen when the sun goes down.

On Friday, February 13 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Love, Lanterns, and Luminaries at Gallant Farm and Gallant Woods Park offers an illuminated evening experience for all ages. Lantern light in a winter landscape has a way of turning a familiar place into something magical.

Then on Sunday, February 15 at 5:00 PM, Owl Prowl at Deer Haven Park, for ages 7 and up, gives participants the chance to listen and look for these elusive nighttime hunters. It’s quiet, a little mysterious, and perfectly suited to a winter evening.

For Active Adults and Lifelong Learners

Preservation Parks hasn’t forgotten older residents who want to stay active and engaged.

The Golden Marathon, for ages 55 and up, takes place twice this month. On Monday, February 2 at 1:30 PM at Deer Haven Park, and again on Monday, February 16 at 1:30 PM at Blues Creek Park. Both require registration and offer a structured way to keep moving through the winter months.

Later in the month, on Saturday, February 21 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and Sunday, February 22 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the Model Railroad Open House at the Sandel Legacy Trailhead welcomes all ages. It’s a chance to step inside, warm up, and enjoy a display that appeals to both nostalgia and curiosity.

A Month That Refuses to Hibernate

Taken together, the February schedule reads like a quiet rebuttal to the idea that winter is a time to stay indoors. Whether it’s walking miles for the Winter 100, stitching with friends at Gallant Farm, listening for owls at dusk, or introducing a toddler to the outdoors for the first time, Preservation Parks is offering something for nearly every interest and age.

February may still be cold. But in Delaware County’s parks, it is anything but dull.
