The Delaware Public Health District’s Project DAWN Naloxone program, in partnership with the Strand Theatre, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, and the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office, is recognizing National Recovery Month by examining addiction and recovery through the meaningful impact of film.
Meaningful Movies: A Series on Addiction will kick off on Tuesday, September 3 at the Strand Theatre and includes a series of powerful and educational films taking place each Tuesday in September to help foster understanding, support, and awareness around addiction and recovery.
On a first come, first served basis, the Health District will offer 100 free movie tickets for each film in the series made possible by the charitable contributions of Angela Jackson. Angela, who lost her daughter to an overdose in 2018, will kick off the second movie in the series, “A Good Person”, on September 10.
Additionally, on Wednesday, September 11, there will be a special screening of the documentary “Our American Family” at 5:30pm, followed by a community panel discussion featuring local addiction recovery agencies and law enforcement officials.
The Health District extends its sincere appreciation for essential support provided of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office, who generously utilized their drug seizure funds to cover the licensing fees for this community initiative. Special acknowledgement also goes to the Delaware County Common Pleas Court Specialized Dockets, including Recovery Docket Judge James P. Schuck and Mental Health Docket Judge David M. Gormley, who are providing community service credit to attendees of the series.
In addition, the following opportunities have been planned during this timeframe of Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 to help the community learn more about preventing drug overdoses.
- Overdose Awareness Day at the JAYwalk on Ohio Wesleyan University campus: On August 28 from 11am-1pm, Health District and Drug-Free Delaware staff will be on hand to give out free Kona Ice snow cones along with Naloxone education materials and take-home kits to Ohio Wesleyan University students. RecoveryOhio Deputy Director, Sarah Moore, will also be on hand to observe and engage in conversation on the importance of overdose awareness.
- The Strand Theatre Presents “Beautiful Boy”: On August 28, the Strand Theatre will present “Beautiful Boy” at 6:30pm, which looks at a son’s addiction and how it affects his father and his family. The Strand is offering the OWU deal for OWU students, faculty, and staff, including a ticket, small drink and small popcorn for $10.
- Health District releases 2023 Overdose Report: On August 28, the Health District will release the 2023 Annual Accidental Overdose Report detailing the overdoses that occurred in Delaware County from Jan. 1, 2023 to Dec. 31, 2023.
