In an announcement shared via social media, the Delaware Public Health District (DPHD) has introduced its new mascot, A.J. This lovable character is named after Dr. A.J. Pounds, who made history in 1920 as Delaware County’s first health commissioner. A.J. is ready to connect with the community, spreading joy and vital public health information.

A Historical Nod to Dr. A.J. Pounds

The mascot’s namesake, Dr. A.J. Pounds, played a pivotal role in the formation of the DPHD, which was established on January 31, 1920. This moment marked the beginning of a century-long commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of Delaware County residents.

Mission and Vision of DPHD

The DPHD’s mission is clear: to promote, preserve, and enhance the health of the community. Its vision is equally inspiring: to be the dedicated leader in achieving the healthiest community to live, work, and grow. These guiding principles have been the backbone of DPHD’s operations and initiatives throughout its history.

Delaware County has consistently been recognized as the Healthiest County in Ohio, a testament to the effective and proactive efforts of the DPHD. This accolade, awarded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, was achieved in multiple years from 2010 to 2023. Such recognition underscores the district’s commitment to maintaining and improving public health standards.

Comprehensive Services and Programs

Of course, the DPHD offers a diverse range of services and programs, each designed to address different aspects of community health:

Preventative Services

Preventative services are a cornerstone of the DPHD’s approach. These services are aimed at early detection and prevention of health issues, ensuring that residents have access to necessary appointments and screenings.

Community Services

The Community Services division focuses on preventing chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke. Through technical assistance, service coordination, programming, and policy development, this division plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall health of the community.

Environmental Services

Ensuring a safe and healthy environment is another key objective of the DPHD. The Environmental Health Division works tirelessly to monitor and improve environmental conditions, contributing to the well-being of all residents.

Meet A.J. in Person!

A.J. is looking forward to meeting all the wonderful residents of Delaware County. Stay tuned to DPHD’s social media channels for updates on where you can catch A.J. shaking paws and spreading valuable public health information throughout the community.
