Delaware State Park is set to become a destination for outdoor fun and inclusivity with the addition of a brand-new playground designed for children of all abilities. Thanks to a collaborative effort involving multiple organizations, the park will soon feature an ice hockey-themed inclusive playground that prioritizes accessibility and sensory play. Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2025, just in time for families to enjoy it during the warmer months.
A Community Effort to Make Play Accessible
This transformative project is made possible through funding from the Ohio State Parks Foundation, which secured a $250,000 grant from the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation. Additional support came from the Delaware County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Perry’s Ice Cream, and CSX, highlighting a community-driven commitment to inclusivity.
“We are so grateful for this incredible gift,” shared Mary Mertz, Director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. “Ohio’s state parks are for everyone, and this playground will ensure that children of all abilities have a safe, fun, and welcoming space to play and explore.”
Former Governor Bob Taft, who chairs the Ohio State Parks Foundation board, praised the collaboration: “This new playground is a testament to our shared vision of creating inclusive outdoor spaces. It reflects what’s possible when communities and organizations come together to make a difference.”
Features of the Inclusive Playground
The ice hockey-themed playground will be the 14th inclusive playground funded by the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation in central Ohio and the first in partnership with the Ohio State Parks Foundation. Highlights include:
- Sensory Play Equipment: Structures designed to stimulate and engage all senses.
- Inclusive Swings: A basket swing and ADA-compliant swing for children of all abilities.
- Climbable “Stinger” Model: A fun nod to the Blue Jackets’ mascot that doubles as a climbing structure.
- Slides and Play Structures: Designed to encourage exploration and active play for everyone.
These features ensure that children of varying abilities can fully engage in outdoor recreation, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
Enhancing Accessibility Throughout the Park
The playground project also includes significant upgrades to park infrastructure. ADA-compliant restrooms and new sidewalks are being constructed to provide ease of access for all visitors. These enhancements underscore the park’s commitment to inclusivity beyond the playground, ensuring that families and individuals with mobility challenges can enjoy the entire space comfortably.
A Springtime Celebration
Construction is slated to wrap up by spring 2025, and a celebratory ribbon-cutting event will officially mark the playground’s opening. This event will bring together the organizations, community members, and families who helped make the project possible, celebrating a shared vision for accessible outdoor fun.
Collaboration in Action
This playground is a shining example of what can be achieved when organizations and communities work together toward a common goal. From the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation to local and state developmental disabilities boards, every partner has played a vital role in making Delaware State Park a more welcoming space for all.
Delaware State Park staff are eagerly anticipating the playground’s completion. “We can’t wait to see the smiles and hear the laughter of children enjoying this amazing new addition,” shared a park representative. “It’s going to be a game-changer for families in our community.”
