Metro Parks is bringing back its popular Winter Hike Series, inviting visitors to embrace the season and explore Ohio’s breathtaking natural beauty. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking to enjoy a brisk stroll, this series offers something for everyone. From twinkling lights to hot chocolate and patches for completing hikes, it’s the perfect way to stay active and make memories this winter.

Kicking Off the Winter Hike Series at Highbanks

The season begins with a magical evening at Highbanks Metro Park on December 1 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Visitors can grab a cup of hot chocolate, pick up their official Winter Hike card, and explore the park under twinkling lights. Highbanks Nature Center will serve as the hub for this kickoff, creating an enchanting atmosphere to set the tone for the hikes ahead.

December Highlights: Twinkling Lights and Lantern Walks

Throughout December, several Metro Parks will transform into dazzling destinations with Twinkling Lights displays. Walk at your own pace from dusk until 8:00 PM at:

  • Battelle Darby Creek
  • Blacklick Woods
  • Highbanks
  • Homestead
  • Inniswood

For an extra festive treat, visit Chestnut Ridge on Friday, December 6, or Saturday, December 7, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM for a Lantern Walk complete with hot chocolate. These special evening hikes are perfect for families and friends to soak in the season’s magic.

Explore, Stamp, and Earn Rewards

The Winter Hike Series isn’t just about enjoying nature—it’s also about achieving goals and collecting rewards! Here’s how it works:

  1. Visit the Parks: Each month, designated parks will offer opportunities for hikers to explore trails at their convenience.
  2. Get Your Hike Card Stamped: At each park, find a staff member to stamp your hike card. Cards can be printed online here.
  3. Earn a Winter Hike Patch: Complete hikes at seven parks to earn the 2024-2025 Metro Parks Winter Hike patch.
  4. Celebrate Your Achievement: Join the celebration on February 23, 2025, to collect your patch and connect with other hikers.
