With this post, 1808Delaware continues our new Mobile DelCo series, where we look at interesting websites with good mobile interfaces that come to our attention, ones that have some connection with Delaware County or which could be used by Delaware County residents.

The National Weather Service is readying a new website that will greatly improve your ability to get accurate and timely meteorological information.

Saying that “We’re about to take our radar webpage to the next level,” the new site will have improvements to presentation, navigation, GPS data, and more.

The radar.weather.gov website has had the same appearance and operation since 2003. It was state of the art at that time, and pushed the bounds of how the National Weather Service could provide data to customers, including in ways to integrate with their own mashups. It currently receives 1.75 million hits on an average day, a figure that rises to hundreds of millions during active weather.

It is also based on Adobe Flash, which is being discontinued soon.

The new site is a bit of a work in progress, and will go live officially on December 16 at: radar. Weather.gov.

For readers of 1812Blockhouse, however, you don’t have to wait — a preview version is currently accessible at: http://preview-radar.weather.gov.
