Winter in Ohio brings its share of challenges—icy roads, heavy snowfall, and unpredictable driving conditions. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has unveiled a powerful tool this winter to help drivers navigate these hurdles more safely: a real-time feature on the Waze app that shows the location of ODOT snowplows.

This innovative move aims to enhance safety and efficiency during winter storms, making Ohio’s roads less hazardous for all. For Delaware County, which is home to an interstate highway which connects the state’s largest metropolitan areas, it’s a strong an important matter.

As snow blankets the state, ODOT crews work tirelessly to clear the roads, often in treacherous conditions. Unfortunately, these conditions also make highway work zones vulnerable to accidents. This winter, ODOT has partnered with Waze to address this problem, equipping most of its fleet with technology that updates plow locations every five minutes.

Drivers can now view ODOT plow locations directly on the Waze app or its website, enabling them to better plan their routes and avoid hazardous conditions. This feature is part of a broader initiative to increase awareness of mobile work zones and reduce winter crashes.

ODOT is also reminding drivers of the importance of Ohio’s “Move Over” law. The law requires motorists to move over a lane or, if that’s not possible, slow down when passing vehicles with flashing lights, including ODOT snowplows.

A poignant reminder came from 16-year-old Matt, who shared his story during a recent ODOT “Move Over Monday” campaign. His father, a Stark County garage employee, works on Ohio’s roads, often in risky conditions.

Matt shared that three years ago, he asked drivers to slow down for his father. As a new driver himself, he realizes how important this is. Slowing down and moving over keeps workers safe and it could save his life.

ODOT’s partnership with Waze represents a growing trend in using technology to improve public safety. By sharing real-time data with Waze, ODOT is not only making winter travel safer but also fostering transparency with Ohioans. The feature has also received praise from drivers who appreciate the ability to see snowplows’ activity on major roads.

The integration of plow locations into Waze could be just the beginning. ODOT is exploring additional ways to provide real-time updates to the public, potentially incorporating other aspects of road maintenance and construction projects into the platform. To keep up with ODOT’s latest updates, including road conditions and traffic changes, Ohioans are encouraged to follow the department on social media and visit ODOT’s website.
