The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has been working to improve the I-71 interchange with U.S. 36/SR 37 in Delaware County since 2017.
ODOT has completed several studies and evaluations aimed at finding roadway improvement options that can alleviate traffic congestion, enhance safety, support future growth in the county, and improve east-west connectivity for commuters and freight. These studies and evaluations have formed the basis of a proposed combined interchange to the south that would offer alternative access to U.S. 36/SR 37 and Sunbury Parkway (see photo below).
Sunbury Parkway is a new east-west roadway that was originally planned to be constructed from Wilson Road to W. Cherry Street using private funds. However, private development has not progressed as anticipated, and private funding is no longer expected. ODOT recognizes the need for these improvements and has decided to move forward using public funds.
As such, they will re-evaluate their previous studies and conduct additional public involvement to ensure that the project’s goals are met effectively.
To this end, ODOT is currently working with Delaware County, Berkshire Township, and the City of Sunbury to conduct a revised feasibility study. This study will evaluate various alignments for Sunbury Parkway and the Wilson Road Extension Area, update traffic analyses, and identify ecological and historic resources within the study area. In addition, the study will evaluate potential noise impacts associated with the proposed interchange improvement.
ODOT recognizes that public input is essential to the success of this project. As such, they plan to reach out to the public during key decision points, including a public meeting scheduled for Spring/Summer 2023. 1808Delaware will share full details about that meeting when they become available.
The goal of this meeting is to give the public an opportunity to provide feedback and input on the proposed interchange improvement. ODOT is committed to ensuring that this project is successful and meets the needs of the community while improving safety, reducing congestion, and supporting future growth in Delaware County.
