Ohio’s state parks have set a remarkable milestone in 2024, welcoming a record-breaking number of visitors enjoying overnight stays in their cabins, campgrounds, and lodges. Outdoor enthusiasts from across the state—and beyond—have increasingly turned to Ohio’s state parks to reconnect with nature, setting a new standard for recreation and relaxation.
Connecting With Nature Like Never Before
“From camping under the stars to boating on our beautiful lakes, people are connecting with nature in new and meaningful ways,” said Mary Mertz, Director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). “These spaces provide endless opportunities for memorable experiences, making our parks a cornerstone of Ohio’s natural heritage.”
This year, state-operated accommodations logged over 919,600 stays, underscoring a growing passion for outdoor adventures. Whether it’s families pitching tents beneath starry skies, groups renting cabins for peaceful retreats, or travelers enjoying the comforts of state park lodges, Ohio’s parks have witnessed unprecedented popularity.
“The figures clearly show that more people than ever are discovering the benefits of spending time outdoors,” said Glen Cobb, Chief of ODNR’s Division of Parks and Watercraft. “Ohio offers something for everyone, from serene hiking trails to invigorating lake adventures, and this year’s numbers prove it.”
A Boost to Local Economies
Ohio’s natural beauty isn’t just good for the soul—it’s also great for business. Tourism generated by state parks significantly supports local communities. According to a recent survey, boating alone contributed $6.4 billion to Ohio’s economy, driven by over 630,000 active boating registrations statewide. Overall, Ohio’s park-related tourism injects $6.4 billion into local economies annually, with each visit translating directly into purchases at local stores, restaurants, and other area attractions.
In 2024, Ohio’s state parks recorded an impressive 1,112,179 overnight stays. The previous record-holding year was 2023 with 1,098,932 overnight reservations.
“Ohio’s parks not only offer stunning natural experiences, but they are also economic powerhouses for local communities,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “Every kayak rented, meal purchased, or souvenir bought helps sustain Ohio businesses and jobs.”
Boating, Hiking, and More: Activities for Every Visitor
With a vast network of 75 state parks open year-round and free to visit, Ohio provides activities suited to every interest and age group. Kayaking and canoeing continue to draw thousands to Ohio’s beautiful lakes and rivers. Hiking trails and cycling paths attract those looking to explore on land, while picturesque lodges provide cozy accommodations for those seeking comfort and relaxation.
Glen Cobb, Chief of the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft, notes, “Ohio offers such diverse outdoor experiences that visitors can find something new and exciting each time they come.”
