The Village of Ostrander is making strides to enhance outdoor recreation for its residents, thanks to funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) NatureWorks grant program. The $51,657 grant will fund the acquisition of 4.583 acres of land north of 8078 Penn Road for trail development, promising new opportunities for walking, hiking, and community connection.
“This project is crucial in fostering a stronger bond between our communities and the great outdoors,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “Through these partnerships, we’re creating exceptional recreational opportunities for every Ohioan to enjoy.”
A Statewide Commitment to Outdoor Excellence
Ostrander’s project is one of 86 initiatives across 73 counties to receive funding, totaling more than $3.4 million in grants. These projects span a wide range of recreational improvements, from playground renovations and splashpads to pickleball courts, kayak launches, and disc golf courses.
“These grants are about variety and accessibility,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said. “By supporting these projects, we’re ensuring that communities can offer top-notch amenities to encourage outdoor activity and exploration.”
The NatureWorks program, funded by the Ohio Parks and Natural Resources Bond Issue passed by voters in 1993, provides up to 75% reimbursement to local governments for the acquisition, development, and rehabilitation of recreational areas.
Looking Ahead in Ostrander
The new trail development aligns with community goals to create more accessible outdoor spaces. The acquired land will serve as a foundation for future recreational enhancements, further establishing Ostrander as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts in Delaware County.
