The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks & Watercraft is urging Ohioans to seize the opportunity to enroll in the Ohio Boater Education Course (OBEC) this fall and winter. Two of the sessions will be held in Delaware County; one at Alum Creek State Park on December 14 and the other on January 11 at the Delaware Wildlife Center Shooting Range near Ashley. This essential training is not only free but also crucial for anyone born on or after January 1, 1982, who plans to operate a boat over 10 horsepower. The course is open to all who wish to join, regardless of boating experience.

Why Boater Education Matters

Taking part in an Ohio Boating Education Course is about more than just meeting legal requirements—it’s about making boating safer and more enjoyable for everyone on Ohio’s waters. Andy Foos, Boating Education Coordinator with ODNR, emphasizes the importance of this training: “Completing the course not only meets the legal requirement but also contributes to safer, more enjoyable boating for everyone.”

Whether you are new to boating or have been on the water for years, this course will help you understand the fundamentals of safe boat operation. It also gives participants valuable insight into navigating Ohio’s lakes and rivers.

What You Will Learn

The OBEC is a one-day, comprehensive class designed to fulfill Ohio’s mandatory boater education requirements. The course covers critical topics for safe and responsible boating, including:

  • Boat Handling and Preparation: Learn how to get your boat ready for a safe day out on the water, including docking, launching, and essential pre-trip checks.
  • Safe Operation Practices: Understand the rules of the water, right-of-way laws, and safe speed limits.
  • Legal Requirements: Stay informed on boating laws and the requirements for operating different types of watercraft.
  • Emergency Procedures: Gain insight into what to do if you or others face an emergency on the water, including how to contact help.
  • Water Sports Safety: Get tips on safely enjoying activities like water skiing and tubing, with special focus on handling passengers and towing practices.

Each session concludes with a test to ensure participants have the necessary knowledge for safe boating. The course is free, but participants must register in advance.
