The Legacy of Bookmobiles

A bookmobile, also known as a mobile library, is a specially designed vehicle that delivers library services to areas with limited access to traditional library buildings. These mobile units have a rich history of expanding the reach of libraries.

  • Historical Roots: One of the first bookmobiles in the U.S. was introduced in 1904 by the People’s Free Library of Chester County, South Carolina. This innovative service featured a mule-drawn wagon carrying wooden boxes filled with books.
  • War-Time Service: During World War II, London’s Metropolitan Borough of Saint Pancras operated a “war-time library on wheels” to ensure citizens could still access books despite the challenges of air raids and blackouts.

To honor the essential role of mobile libraries, the American Library Association celebrates National Library Outreach Day each April. This day recognizes the importance of bookmobiles and other outreach services that bring library resources to underserved communities.
