Drivers in Delaware County and central Ohio know well that our particular variety of winter weather can be a bit unpredictable.

With the arrival of a major snowfall this week, it seems a good time to remind local drivers that it is possible to stay informed and on top of the situation, no matter how quickly it might change. Two services for local motorists can make a difference between a successful trip or winding up in a snowbank.

First are Delaware County Snow Level Alerts.

If you have not yet signed up for these, you should do so as soon as possible by texting DELCOSNOW to 888777. After doing so, you will receive text alerts when the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office declares a Snow Level emergency.

Note that this is a text service only; no emails or phone calls can be sent.

For details, go to: https://emergencycomms.co.delaware.oh.us/delco-alerts and read the FAQs for Snow Alerts.

The Ohio Department of Transportation provides a motorists service called “OHGO” that can be very important in planning trips in winter weather.

As presented on its website, OHGO “…provides Ohio travelers with up-to-date information on road conditions, traffic, construction, and other activity affecting roadways managed by The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). Information provided by this site is updated frequently and comes from a variety of sources, such as pavement sensors and monitoring stations, traffic cameras, and through direct input by ODOT personnel.”

While the state is divided into regions, it is easy to move the map to show all locations in Ohio. Current traffic alerts, such as for winter weather conditions, are highlighted as are travel time updates, construction areas, and even views from dozens of traffic cameras.

An OHGO app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, includes the availability of real time traffic updates delivered directly to your smartphone.

OHGO is easy to reach at: www.ohgo.com.
