Families seeking a welcoming and sensory-sensitive movie experience won’t want to miss this month’s installment of the Strand Theatre’s Sensory Series. On Saturday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m., the historic downtown venue will present a specially adapted showing of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, perfect for children and adults who benefit from a more relaxed theater environment. Doors open at 9:30 a.m., allowing guests to get settled and comfortable before the movie begins.

What Are Sensory Sensitive Showings?

Each month, the Strand Theatre and Cultural Arts Association hosts sensory-friendly screenings designed to create a safe and inclusive environment for individuals on the autism spectrum or those with other developmental or sensory processing differences. These events offer an alternative to traditional movie showings by adjusting lighting and sound and embracing spontaneous expression.

Instead of the dark, loud environment that can overwhelm some moviegoers, the lights are turned up slightly, the volume is turned down, and patrons are free to move about, talk, dance, sing along, or express themselves however they feel comfortable. There’s no need to sit still or stay silent—at these showings, joy and freedom are encouraged.

These Sensory Series events take place on the fourth Saturday of each month, offering a consistent and welcoming space for all members of the community to come together and enjoy stories on the big screen.

This Month’s Feature: A Beloved Disney Classic

This month’s featured film is Lilo & Stitch, the critically acclaimed 2002 animated adventure from Walt Disney Feature Animation. Set in the lush islands of Hawaii, the film follows the story of Lilo, a quirky and independent young girl who adopts what she believes to be a dog—but is really Stitch, a genetically engineered alien with a knack for destruction.

At first, Stitch seems like the last creature that should be part of a family. But as he bonds with Lilo and her older sister Nani, he learns the meaning of love, belonging, and the powerful Hawaiian value of ʻohana—“family,” which means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.

The film was praised for its unique characters, emotional depth, vibrant setting, and original storyline. It grossed more than $273 million worldwide and spawned multiple sequels, a TV series, and even a 2025 live-action remake, making it one of the most enduring and beloved Disney properties of the 21st century.

A Warm Welcome for All Ages

The Strand Theatre’s Sensory Series is open to children, teens, adults, and their families. Whether your child is attending their first movie or your family includes someone with special needs, the Strand’s staff is trained and ready to provide a welcoming, judgment-free atmosphere.

You’ll also find accessibility features that make the experience more comfortable for all, including easy access to restrooms, accessible seating, and a friendly team of volunteers and staff to help with anything you need.

Spread the Word and Join the Fun

Community support plays a key role in the success of the Sensory Series. Attendees are encouraged to invite friends, share the event on social media, or even bring their whole support group or classroom. There’s no need to RSVP—just show up, find a seat, and get ready to enjoy the movie in a way that works for your family.
