In its recent meeting the City of Sunbury Parks and Recreation Committee reviewed upcoming community projects, including upgrades at the Veterans Memorial and preparations for the annual Christmas on the Square event. With updates on local parks and a new city map for improved visitor access, the committee continues to enhance Sunbury’s community spaces.
Veterans Memorial Benches to Receive Granite Makeover
The American Legion is stepping up to replace the existing stone benches at the Veterans Memorial in Sunbury Square with upgraded granite benches. This project is a collaborative effort involving the city and the Legion, with the cost fully covered by the American Legion. Additionally, the Legion plans to clean and reset the memorial plaque, refreshing this central tribute to local veterans.
Christmas on the Square: A Community Celebration Returns
In anticipation of the holiday season, Nancy Crawford of the Chamber of Commerce shared plans for the popular Christmas on the Square event. Scheduled to include a parade, food trucks, and festive activities, the event will require strategic street closures for a seamless experience.
Plans call for temporary closures of Granville Street to create a safe pedestrian area for the food trucks, expected to arrive around 2:00 PM. Additional street closures on Cherry and Columbus Streets will allow the parade to proceed safely. With support from the police and other city services, Ms. Crawford expressed confidence in the preparations.
New Park Map Unveiled, Future Signage Considered
The committee also reviewed a newly designed city park map, created in response to requests for a more detailed and accessible layout of Sunbury’s parks. This map focuses on the central areas where most city parks are located, aiming to help residents and visitors find these spaces with ease.
During a discussion on park accessibility, committee members raised the need for signage at Old Orchard Park and other lesser-known parks. Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Crawford, who had recently walked through Old Orchard Park, noted that it lacks identifying signage.
Monthly Park Updates and Future Projects
Several projects across Sunbury’s parks were also highlighted during the meeting:
- Freedom Park Improvements: An Eagle Scout has taken on a project to replace two bridges and add new benches throughout the disc golf course at Freedom Park. Any leftover materials will be used to repaint existing benches or repair additional structures. A disc golf tournament open to the public is also scheduled for October 19.
- Big Nut Strut 5K: This weekend, General Rosecrans Park will host the Big Nut Strut 5K. The event promises to bring the community together for fitness and fun, with participants of all ages expected to take part.
- Fishing for a Cure: On September 14, Sunbury’s reservoirs saw a successful turnout for the first annual Fishing for a Cure derby, held in memory of Jackson Preston. With over 200 kids participating, the event exceeded expectations. Fish stocking took place shortly after the derby, ensuring future fishing activities will be enjoyable for the community.
The meeting concluded with an expression of gratitude from committee members for the quick turnaround on the updated parks map, and the committee adjourned after approving a motion to finalize the next steps.
