County Fairs, Day Care, New Case Plateau; OEA Calls For Remote Learning; Latest Numbers

Tuesday was a particularly busy day for announcements and news coverage related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re sharing several of these items here.

County Fairs. Sharing that the experience to date with county fairs has proven problematic in minimizing the spread of the virus, Governor Mike DeWine announced that county fairs and independent fairs taking place on or after July 31 will be limited to junior fairs where children can show livestock, 4-H projects, etc., but without rides or grandstand entertainment. Unless modified before then, this will impact the Delaware County Fair in September.

The Governor said, “It’s clear we cannot have fairs that are safe.”

New Case “Plateau.” The Governor shared the newest COVID-19 numbers on Tuesday which suggest that the daily increase in new cases may be beginning to level off. The number of new cases for the last seven days (9,282), for instance, is down from the previous seven (9,608). “If you look at the cases, they have plateaued for awhile,” DeWine shared.

Day Care Class Sizes. The Governor announced that normal class sizes in Ohio’s day care centers may return on August 9. If a particular center wants to maintain smaller classes, he said, a subsidy will be available.

OEA Calls For Remote Learning In Hard Hit Counties. On Tuesday, the Ohio Education Association issued a news release calling for remote learning for schools in Ohio counties that have a Level 4 or Level 3 status. That news release can be read here.

Latest Numbers. On Tuesday, the Ohio Department of Health shared that there are 86,497 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in Ohio and 3,382 confirmed and probable COVID-19 deaths. A total of 10,425 people have been hospitalized, including 2,488 admissions to intensive care units.
