Westerville Public Service is performing maintenance within Otterbein Cemetery (located on the southwest corner of Knox & Walnut Streets) this spring.

Two trees in the cemetery are being removed due to poor health. The City will plant new trees in a safer location.

Additionally, the Public Service team has identified several unapproved plantings in the cemetery that have become unkempt and are encroaching on nearby grave plots. As such, some of these plantings will be marked for removal. A spring cleanup of items from graves and the columbarium will begin March 15.

The City owns and maintains three local cemeteries, including Otterbein Cemetery which was established in 1856. A comprehensive list of Cemetery Rules and Regulations can be found on the City’s website.

Located on the campus of Otterbein University, the Otterbein Cemetery is one of Westerville’s oldest and most significant burial grounds. Established in 1849, the cemetery serves as the final resting place for many prominent individuals from the university’s history, including its founder, the Reverend Philip William Otterbein, and numerous other faculty and alumni.

The cemetery is beautifully maintained, with a park-like setting that offers a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Take a walk along its winding paths and discover the gravestones that mark the lives of those who shaped the history of Otterbein University and the city of Westerville.

Please contact Westerville Public Service at (614) 901-6740 with any questions.
