The natural world will be on full display this summer through programming at Preservation Parks of Delaware County.
Launched on May 27 at Shale Hollow Park, the “My Neck of the Woods” exhibit allows visitors to be transported to different lands to explore the Earth’s forests—boreal, temperate and tropical. Visitors are encouraged to use their senses to explore these habitats from the forest floor to the top of the canopy. Forest habitats play a vital role in the survival of humans, the environment and the planet.
This is a hands-on exhibit that runs through September 4 (Labor Day). In addition to that exhibit, forest-themed movies, guests and programs will occur throughout the summer.
Adding a literary twist to the summer, the “My Neck of the Woods” Book Club will run every Tuesday at 6:30 PM, welcoming participants aged 16 and up. The forests will come alive in the pages of the selected books, ranging from action backdrops to magical enchantments. The book club begins on June 20 at Emily Traphagen Park with “The Trees” by Conrad Richter.
Subsequent sessions will feature “The Silent Sky” by Allen Eckert on July 18 at Shale Hollow Park and “The Overstory” by Richard Powers on August 22 at Gallant Woods Park.
For the youngest nature explorers, the Little Adventurers Summer Series will take place from 10 AM to 12 PM, catering to the 0-5 age group. This initiative encourages little ones to get comfortable in nature, offering self-guided stations with hands-on activities and crafts. Each session will focus on a different theme, from “Temperate Forest” to “Farm Life,” and everything in between, including birds, pollinators, and polliwogs. Guardians should accompany their children, and the whole family is welcome to join. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared to get a little messy!
