The Arts Castle in Delaware is leaning fully into winter with a packed lineup of drawing and painting classes led by artist and instructor Dawn Petrill. Running from mid-January through early March, the schedule offers something for children, teens, adults, couples, and even parents looking to create alongside their kids.

This winter’s classes are spread across evenings and weekends, making them accessible for busy schedules while still offering focused, hands-on instruction.

Let’s Draw Kicks Things Off

The winter session opens with Let’s Draw, running Wednesdays from January 14 through February 4, from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Designed for ages 6 to 11, the class invites younger artists to explore drawing fundamentals while experimenting with a variety of materials and techniques. It’s structured to encourage curiosity and confidence rather than rigid outcomes.

A Creative January Weekend

On Saturday, January 24, the Arts Castle hosts the Mask Makers Workshop from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Open to ages 8 to 14, the workshop explores how masks have been used across cultures, blending history, design, and hands-on creativity as participants design and create their own masks.

Painting Together, Literally

February brings several opportunities to paint with intention and connection. On Saturday, February 7, from 10:00 AM to Noon, Two Canvases, One Heart invites parents and children ages 5 and up to paint side by side. Each pair creates two canvases designed to connect visually and emotionally into one heart-filled artwork.

Valentine’s season continues on Thursday, February 12, from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, with Two of Hearts: A Couple’s Paint and Sip. Open to adults 15 and older, the evening blends creativity, celebration, and a relaxed social atmosphere centered on a Valentine’s-themed painting experience.

Building Skill and Confidence

For adults looking to strengthen fundamentals, Drawing for Joy & Confidence runs Thursdays from February 12 through March 5, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Open to adults 15 and up, the class focuses on drawing objects and techniques that build both technical skill and personal confidence over time.

Capturing Light and Color

The winter lineup wraps up with Moments in Color, an Impressionistic Landscape Workshop for adults 15 and older. The workshop meets Wednesday, February 25, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Saturday, February 28, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Participants will explore light and color in a three-hour painting format inspired by impressionist techniques.

A Winter Well Spent

All classes take place at the Arts Castle, located at 190 W. Winter Street in Delaware. Registration is open now, and winter sessions traditionally fill quickly. For anyone looking to replace winter doldrums with something tangible, creative, and social, this lineup offers plenty of reasons to pick up a pencil or brush and get started.
