Ohio Wesleyan University has announced its October 2022 lineup of public events. Unless otherwise noted, admission is free.
Now through Oct. 2 – “From OWU’s Studios,” featuring works by Ohio Wesleyan Fine Arts faculty Kristina Bogdanov, Frank Hobbs, Jeff Nilan, and Karen Weeks, and “Then and Now: Fifty Years of Camera Vision,” featuring a photographic retrospective by Justin Kronewetter, retired OWU professor of Fine Arts and founding director of the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, at the museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. During the academic year, the Ross is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Ross is handicap-accessible and admission is always free. Now through Oct. 11, with a Sept. 21 virtual artist talk – Works by Columbus-based artist and designer Nick Stull, in the Werner Gallery inside Edgar Hall, 35 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. A 2007 Ohio Wesleyan graduate, Stull specializes in murals, portraiture, painting, branding, design, and illustration. Stull will give an online artist talk at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21. Now through Jan. 4, 2023 – “Women’s Work,” featuring art created by Eliana Calle Saari in tribute to the work of women during the pandemic, in Gallery 2001 in Ohio Wesleyan’s Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. For several months in 2020, Saari was locked down behind the closed borders of the Caribbean Island of Antigua. The prints and books on display at OWU document her observations of the women of this island nation who continued to fulfill their duty as workers, mothers, and caretakers in a time of uncertainty, fear, and hope. 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 – Serial entrepreneur and inventor Dawn Dickson, founder and CEO of PopCom, presents “Entrepreneurship: Are YOU Built to Scale?” She will speak in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Dickson has more than 20 years of experience in technology, marketing, and business development. In her presentation, she will discuss her journey and how listeners can leverage their unique skill sets to design the life and business they have always desired. Topics will include being self-aware in business, how to take a business from idea to product market fit, “You’re a CEO, now what?”, designing the life and business you desire, and finding your “Why.” Dickson’s presentation is Ohio Wesleyan’s 2022-2023 Robert L. 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 – OWU Connection Conference, featuring a day of student presentations and other programs highlighting Ohio Wesleyan’s signature experience, the OWU Connection. The student presentations will be tied to all four segments of the OWU Connection – research and independent scholarship, service, career development, and study away. Held in locations throughout campus, this first-of-its-kind conference will include the annual Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium, a Fine Arts showcase, and more. Noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 6 – Ohio Wesleyan hosts its first Black Wall Street event, in the Atrium of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Come learn, network, and shop from local BIPOC-owned businesses and BIPOC student-entrepreneurs who will promote their businesses during the OWU Connection Conference. This event is in partnership with The Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship; Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, Delaware Entrepreneurial Center at OWU; and OWU Connection. 4 p.m. – Rededication of Slocum Hall. This historic building reopens following a 14-month, $11.25-million-donor-funded restoration. The new home of the OWU Connection, the university’s signature student experience, Slocum Hall is highlighted by a 70-foot-by-20-foot leaded glass ceiling visible from its second and third floors. Martini will discuss “A Walk Through the Lyman Alpha Forest” at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. His current research interests include topics related to observational cosmology and instrumentation, particularly for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Martini also is interested in the formation and evolution of galaxies and the evolution of supermassive black holes, particularly quasars. 4 p.m. Oct. 19 – Award-winning poet David Eye, author of “Seed,” gives a reading, in the Bayley Room on the second floor of Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Of “Seed,” critics have said, “The poems in ‘Seed’ are luminous and intimate. With emotional clarity that surprises and enriches, David Eye has crafted a debut that illuminates how queerness shapes and shelters the self.” Eye’s work also has appeared in journals and anthologies including The Queer South, Hunger Mountain, and Lambda Literary. He is the recipient of a 2017 Walter E. Dakin Fellowship in Poetry and a 2014 Tennessee Williams Scholarship in Poetry from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University and is working as a visiting assistant professor this year at Ohio Wesleyan. Admission is free. 7 p.m. Oct. 20 – Yoshiko Herrera, Ph.D., professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, presents “Russia’s War Against Ukraine,” in the Benes Rooms of OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. In a recent interview, she said: “I think it’s important to understand that this isn’t a conflict between ethnic Russians and ethnic Ukrainians. After her five-year relationship ends, Joni must redefine her identity – and fast. Through strangers and friends, cheese plates, and spotlights, she embarks on a madcap journey to carve out a space for herself in a world that won’t quite let her. “Fill Fill Fill Fill Fill Fill Fill” is a comedy about how we see and value women – and how we don’t. It contains mature themes and is not appropriate for children. Directed by Ohio Wesleyan instructor Bradford Sadler, the play will be performed in Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware.
