For one afternoon, Gray Chapel will belong to Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, the Avengers and a galaxy of other larger-than-life characters. The Central Ohio Symphony will present Superheroes and Supervillains at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 11, bringing some of film and television’s most recognizable music to the Ohio Wesleyan University campus.

The family-friendly concert will be led by conductor Jaime Morales-Matos at Gray Chapel, located in University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St. in Delaware.

Big-screen music in a big setting

The program reads almost like a tour through modern movie history. Hans Zimmer’s Batman: The Dark Knight Rises will share the afternoon with Rupert Gregson-Williams’ Wonder Woman, Danny Elfman’s Spider-Man and Alan Silvestri’s The Avengers. There will also be a trip to the darker side with John Perkins’ Disney Villains and John Williams’ unmistakable The Imperial March.

Science-fiction fans will hear Calvin Custer’s Star Trek Through the Years, while adventure arrives through Klaus Badelt’s Pirates of the Caribbean and Lalo Schifrin’s Mission Impossible. The superhero roster continues with Superman Returns, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and X-Men: Apocalypse.

John Williams fans will get an extra helping of one of Hollywood’s best-known composers through A Tribute to John Williams, arranged by Paul Lavender.

A concert built for recognition

This is the kind of program where listeners may recognize a theme within seconds.

That familiarity is part of the appeal. For younger audience members, the concert can serve as an introduction to the power of a live orchestra. For longtime film fans, it offers the chance to hear music normally experienced through theater speakers performed in the resonant surroundings of Gray Chapel. The Central Ohio Symphony describes the concert as family-friendly, with music tied to favorite heroes, villains and screen adventures.

Superheroes and Supervillains begins at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 11, at Gray Chapel on the Ohio Wesleyan University campus in Delaware. Tickets are available through the Central Ohio Symphony’s online ticketing system.
