Ohio Wesleyan University has announced its lineup of public events for the remainder of August and the month of September. Unless otherwise noted, admission is free.
All guests to the university must wear facial coverings when indoors, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status, and follow any other public health recommendations from the Delaware Public Health District and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Aug. 16-Dec. 13 – “From Our Collection: Covers for a Small Library,” featuring works by R.B. Kitaj, in Gallery 2001 inside Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Born in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, Kitaj is described as a key figure in European and American contemporary painting whose “highly personal paintings and drawings reflect his deep interest in history; cultural, social and political ideologies; and issues of identity.” He died in 2007. Gallery 2001, located on the library’s first floor, is open during library hours. For times, visit library.owu.edu/hours. Aug. 25-Oct. 24 – “Baltimore Lives,” featuring photographs by nationally recognized photographer and 1974 Ohio Wesleyan graduate John Clark Mayden, in the West and Mayhew galleries of the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. Mayden published his award-winning book “Baltimore Lives: The Portraits of John Clark Mayden” in 2019. It is a collection of 101 photographs documenting Black Baltimore residents between 1970 and 2012. Mayden’s photos also are featured in the 2020 HBO film “Between the World and Me,” based on the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates. During the academic year, the Ross is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will be closed Oct. 13-17 for mid-semester break. Aug. 25-Nov. 12 – “Women Behind the Lens,” featuring works from OWU’s collection by 26 women photographers and celebrating arts patron Sally Ross Soter, in the Kuhlman Galleries of the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. A sister exhibition of the same name will be held in the Ross Gallery of the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA). A virtual opening to celebrate both exhibits will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 29, with registration required at owu.edu/lens. The online event will feature Catherine Evans, former Ross Curator of Photography at the CMA, and Claire Weidman, former collections manager at the Ross Art Museum. 9 p.m. Aug. 20 and 27 and 8 p.m. Sept. 10, 17, and 24 – Evening programs at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on sky conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and star gazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Noon Sept. 27 – Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium, featuring poster presentations from Ohio Wesleyan students who participated in OWU’s 10-week Summer Science Research Program or who conducted summer research at other institutions around the country. The event will be held in the atrium of the Schimmel/Conrades Science Center, 90 S. Henry St., Delaware. Admission is free. Learn more at owu.edu/ssrp.
4:30 p.m. Sept. 29 – Torrey Peters, author of “Detransition, Baby,” reads from the novel, described by Kirkus Reviews as “smart, funny, and bighearted.” The novel follows “three women – transgender and cisgender – whose lives collide after an unexpected pregnancy forces them to confront their deepest desires around gender, motherhood, and sex.” Peters is the OWU Department of English’s 2021 Michael C. Quinn Memorial Fiction lecturer. She will speak in the Bayley Room inside Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Admission is free, and books will be available for purchase at the event.
