Are you, family members, or a friend harboring a desire to serve as a university professor?

If so, this might be an opportunity for you/them!

Ohio Wesleyan University is accepting applications now for 11 tenure-track professorships for the 2021-2022 academic year. The new faculty are being hired as a cluster with a focus on supporting the university’s ongoing work to provide a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus environment.

The cluster hire is a first for Ohio Wesleyan, which in June launched a comprehensive antiracism action plan focusing on the areas of structure and policies, teaching and learning, recruiting and retaining students and employees, and campus climate.

In announcing the plan, President Rock Jones, Ph.D., said it was intended to “create meaningful and immediate change at OWU.”

“We are sharing a simple message with the OWU community, our neighbors in Delaware, and all our contacts across the nation and around the world,” Jones said. “Stand together and work for change.”

Ohio Wesleyan currently is accepting applications at owu.edu/joinOWUfaculty for the following positions:

  • Assistant Professor of Africana, Gender, and Identity Studies
  • Assistant Professor of Applied Theatre
  • Assistant Professor of Fine Arts
  • Assistant Professor of Computer Science
  • Assistant Professor of Economics
  • Assistant Professor of Education
  • Assistant Professor of English
  • Assistant Professor of Mathematics
  • Assistant Professor of Physics
  • Assistant Professor of Psychology
  • Assistant Professor of Theatre Studies

The new hires were identified during a yearlong faculty-led review of Ohio Wesleyan’s academic program that began in fall 2019, prior to the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic. As part of the review, OWU’s professors examined the university’s academic departments and majors, recommending several changes that were accepted by the university’s Board of Trustees in October.

As of fall 2021, the university will offer 70 majors and implement changes including combining areas to create a Department of Performing Arts, Department of Environment and Sustainability, and Department of Africana, Gender, and Identity Studies.

“We believe the changes to our curriculum allow Ohio Wesleyan to focus on what we do best and what our students and the world need most,” said Provost Karlyn Crowley, Ph.D. “These changes also support our ongoing effort to create a diverse, inclusive, and antiracist campus community that celebrates the value of all persons.

“The faculty who join us will become part of an educational community that values flexibility, equity, and interdisciplinarity and fosters close working relationships with students through our signature program in experiential learning, The OWU Connection,” Crowley said. “We look forward to welcoming our new tenure-track professors next year as Ohio Wesleyan continues to educate the next generation of engaged citizens and leaders.”

At Ohio Wesleyan, 100 percent of full-time, tenure-track faculty hold a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree or the equivalent terminal degree in their field. In addition, all OWU professors are classroom teachers as the university does not have graduate teaching assistants. Ohio Wesleyan professors also serve as academic advisers and mentors, helping students to succeed and thrive as they work to earn their bachelor’s degree and plan their life’s path.
