Good news this week in southern Delaware County.

The Liberty Township Fire Department has improved the Insurance Services Organization (ISO) rating for Liberty Township and the City of Powell to a rating of 3 following a recent survey of the department. The Department had previously received a rating of 4.

ISO’s Public Protection Classification Program (PPC) evaluates communities according to a uniform set of criteria, incorporating nationally recognized standards developed by the National Fire Protection Association and the American Water Works Association.

“This rating places the Liberty Township Fire Department in the top five percent of fire departments in the country and could help lower insurance rates for our residents and commercial businesses,” said Fire Chief Tom O’Brien. “We will continue to improve our rating as we work through the fire accreditation process.”

ISO’s Public Protection Classification Program (PPC) plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies. Most U.S. insurers – including the largest ones – use PPC information as part of their decision-making when deciding what business to write, coverages to offer or prices to charge for personal or commercial property insurance. This program ranks fire departments on a scale of 1-10, with one being the best.
