To qualify for this program, students need to take the PSAT/NMSQT, usually in their junior year, and meet specific requirements such as being enrolled full-time in high school, having a strong academic record, and intending to enroll in college after graduation.

Notable individuals who have been National Merit Scholarship Program honorees include prominent figures like Bill Gates, Mae Jemison, Jeff Bezos, and Elena Kagan among others4. Additionally, some universities offer additional merit-based funding for students who are National Merit Scholars, Finalists, or Semifinalists, with annual reports displaying the number of award winners enrolled at different institutions.
