Olentangy’s fifth high school has a name more than a century older than the building it will occupy. The Board of Education selected Olentangy Hyatts High School during its October 8 meeting. The decision gives an official identity to the school scheduled to open for the 2028-2029 school year at the northwest corner of Bunty Station and Sawmill roads in Delaware Township.

The district announced the choice Thursday night in its official naming update.

From 729 Suggestions To One Name

Olentangy invited students, families, employees, and community members to submit ideas throughout September. The district received 729 suggestions. Board policy required the name to reflect local history, geography, or a significant community connection. District staff presented the most frequently suggested names at Thursday’s meeting.

The board chose Hyatts after considering the public suggestions, staff recommendations, student input, and historical research. The district did not identify a mascot, colors, or attendance area as part of the announcement. That distinction matters. The name is settled, but several decisions that will shape the school’s identity and student body remain ahead.

A School Name Returns To Its Roots

Hyatts has a place in Olentangy’s history that predates the modern district’s rapid expansion.

The district’s history of Olentangy Schools says four consolidated K-12 schools replaced scattered one-room schoolhouses in the early 20th century. Powell opened first in 1911, followed by Hyatts in 1914, Berlin in 1915, and Orange in 1916. Those community schools remained central to local education for decades. Hyatts, Berlin, and Powell closed in 1973, when their students were brought together at the district’s Shanahan Road campus.

The name is not entirely absent from the present-day system. Hyatts Middle School opened in the 2007-2008 school year, according to the district’s school-opening timeline. The new high school will carry that local name to another generation of students.

The Building Behind The Name

The high school is planned as a roughly 300,000-square-foot building for grades nine through twelve. Olentangy’s facilities plan describes an 800-seat auditorium, main and auxiliary gymnasiums, a media center, commons, cafeteria, and weight room. Outdoor plans include a stadium with a turf field and track, practice fields, tennis courts, and baseball and softball fields.

Those elements are planning details, not a statement that construction is complete. The district’s State of the Facilities plan provides the broader project outline.

Olentangy says it will now begin selecting school colors and a mascot. The district expects to announce attendance boundaries on December 10. That calendar gives families two dates to hold in mind: December for the map showing whom the school will serve, and fall 2028 for the first students to enter a building now known as Olentangy Hyatts High School.
