Fall has duly arrived in Sunbury, and with it comes a familiar seasonal chore for homeowners. The city’s annual leaf collection program is underway with crews scheduled to make their rounds through neighborhoods into early December.

The 2026 collection schedule divides Sunbury into four sections, allowing city crews to work through different areas on designated dates. Residents can consult the accompanying map to determine which section includes their property and when to expect collection.

Four Sections, One Autumn Cleanup

The city has organized its collection routes to account for differences between established neighborhoods and newer developments.

Sections A and B encompass Sunbury’s older, more heavily wooded neighborhoods, where mature trees typically produce larger quantities of fallen leaves. Those areas receive more frequent collection dates throughout the season.

Sections C and D cover newer portions of the city, with collection scheduled approximately every two weeks.

The program began Monday in Section A, with Section B’s first collection scheduled for Wednesday. Section C begins Friday, followed by Section D next Monday, October 19.

Collection will continue through December 9, with the final scheduled dates varying by section.

Getting Leaves Ready for Pickup

You know the regular drill. City officials are reminding residents that proper placement of leaf piles is essential to keeping collection crews moving efficiently. Homeowners with sidewalks should place leaves in the tree lawn, the grassy strip between the sidewalk and street. Those without sidewalks should move leaves as close to the roadway as possible without placing them in the street itself. Leaves should never be piled around mailboxes, fire hydrants, traffic signs, utility poles, parked vehicles, or other obstacles.

The city also emphasizes that employees will not hand-rake leaves. Residents must position their piles where collection equipment can reach them.

Check the Map Before You Rake

Residents should use the accompanying map to identify their collection section, then consult the published schedule for the appropriate pickup dates. The final scheduled collections are December 3 for Section A, December 7 for Section B, December 8 for Section C, and December 9 for Section D. With several weeks of leaf collection ahead, the program gives Sunbury residents an opportunity to keep their properties tidy as the city makes its annual transition from autumn color to winter weather.
