It’s a well-known autumn routine. The color show comes first. Then comes the rake.

For some older Sunbury residents, clearing a yard can become a difficult seasonal job, particularly when mobility or vision makes the work harder. The City of Sunbury is recruiting groups for its Fall Leaf Assistance program, which pairs a practical need with a flexible way to volunteer. The city schedules raking seven days a week from mid-October through the end of November. Volunteer groups choose a day and a daylight time that works for them. See Sunbury’s volunteer opportunities and leaf-assistance details. Sunbury, OH

A Schedule Built Around The Volunteers

The program is designed for groups rather than a single citywide workday. Friends, families, faith communities, and workplace teams are all invited to take part. Because each group selects its own date and time, the work can fit around school, church, family, or job schedules while still taking place before the early darkness of late fall.

Groups can contact Amber Swain at aswain@sunburyohio.org or 740-965-2684 to sign up or request more information.

The city’s page does not list a fixed volunteer-registration deadline or promise a particular assignment date. Groups should contact the coordinator early enough to arrange the work during the mid-October through November window.

Older Residents Can Ask For Help

Sunbury also provides a registration link for older residents who want leaf assistance. The public page does not state age, income, residency, property-size, or other eligibility rules. It also does not describe how quickly a request will be matched with volunteers. Residents should use the city’s registration link or call the municipal office before assuming that service has been scheduled.

That distinction matters because this is organized volunteer help, not the same thing as a municipal curbside leaf-collection route. The task described by the city is raking at a resident’s home.

More Than One Way To Pitch In

The same city page offers another route into community service through Adopt-a-Park. Individuals, families, businesses, churches, and other groups may adopt a Sunbury park or Town Square green space for a single day or for a year. A yearlong adoption requires three cleanup days.

Typical work can include collecting litter, raking leaves, pulling weeds, cleaning playground equipment and picnic tables, sweeping hard surfaces, and reporting damage or unsafe conditions. Participation is free, although volunteers generally provide their own equipment. The city supplies trash bags, and some tools may be available from the Streets Department upon request.

Whether the assignment is one yard or one park, the idea is the same: a manageable block of volunteer time can take a substantial fall chore off someone else’s list.
