The City of Westerville Finance Department received the Ohio Auditor of State Award with Distinction. The announcement was made Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Westerville City Council Meeting at Westerville City Hall.
The award was presented to the City and Lee Ann Shortland, Westerville Director of Finance, by Scott Brown, Central Ohio’s Liaison to State Auditor Keith Faber.
“The award puts Westerville in a very select group,” Brown said. “Our office audits approximately 4,200 entities (across the state) per year and less than four percent are eligible for this award.”
“This award reflects the hard work and dedication of all of the City of Westerville staff and employees who make every effort each day to attain accounting excellence. What this truly means is across the entire organization you have the people and processes in place to understand fiscal accountability.”
Specifically, Shortland was recognized for her leadership of the finance department, having served in the director role for the past 14 years of her 26 overall with Westerville, starting in 1999.
“The finance team is extraordinary. I’ve never worked with a finer group of individuals,” said Shortland. “They take integrity, loyalty, honesty, ethics … all of those things are ingrained in their character.
“There’s only an elite group that gets to be a part of our City team. We love serving the public. We have certain values that align with the City’s values. You can’t teach that. It’s a part of the person. That’s why this City at all levels is able to bring home this award most every year.”
The City of Westerville Finance Department also has received the Government Finance Officers Association Budget Award each of the last two years.
