Westerville City Schools has qualified for the Auditor of State Award with Distinction following its state audit for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020. It is the ninth consecutive year the district has received the commendation.

For the seventh consecutive year, there were no findings against the district in the FY2020 state audit. In addition, the auditor’s office didn’t find any issues that would necessitate a management letter.

State Auditor Keith Faber recognized the district and Treasurer/CFO Nicole Marshall at Monday’s school board meeting.

“Audits aren’t necessarily about finding fraud,” Faber said during the board meeting. “What they are doing is finding best practices and making sure the controls are in place so that the entity’s books and records can have some reliability. To get this top award, you really have to show that your books and records have a confidence in them that leads our staff to conclude you are one of the best of the best.”

Fewer than 4 percent of the 6,000 governmental entities qualify to receive the award, he said.

“This award is a testament to diligence that Westerville City Schools puts into ensuring we are accountable to our taxpayers for the dollars they entrust to us,” Marshall said. “From the Board of Education to the individual school buildings, everyone works with the mindset that we are good stewards of public funds. This award would not be possible without the whole district working to that end. We thank Auditor Faber for continuing to recognize Westerville City Schools’ hard work with this distinction.”

Earlier this month, the district received the highest rating in the state auditor’s new approach to monitoring transparency in government and measuring compliance to Ohio’s open records laws.
