One of Delaware’s favorite dining experiences is expanding.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Son of Thurman, part of the Thurman Café Family of restaurants, announced that its 2nd location, (3rd overall), will be opening in Galena/Westerville in early 2021.
Son Of Thurman acquired the former Mudflats at 31 Columbus Street in Galena during the fall of 2020 and is currently remodeling with a target opening date of February.
While circumstances have been difficult for the restaurant industry this year, Son Of Thurman shared that it has worked towards growth, in addition to navigating the travails of the global pandemic and the effects it has had on the service industry.
“Obviously, I wanted to ensure that we continued to operate as smoothly as possible during these unprecedented times, and thanks to our amazing people and great customers, we’ve been able to do that. I also thought that there might be opportunities arising that otherwise might not come about, so I kept my ear to the ground,” says fourth generation owner Chris DeVol.
DeVol has lived in the Sunbury/Galena area for 16 years, so he is comfortable with the local market. “The area has seen incredible growth since I’ve been here, and there’s no sign of that slowing down at all. One of the things that I really like about Galena is that it’s easier to get to than Polaris and other areas for so many people locally. Plus it’s just a great setting overall, on Hoover Reservoir, in a bucolic small town close to so much housing; a fantastic location to head to for lunch or dinner.”
Plans for Son Of Thurman’s second location include doubling the size of the already large outdoor dining area, and extensive interior remodeling. “We’ve got to ‘Thurmanize” it, naturally!” says DeVol. “Being a local resident for so long, I’m at home here, and really look forward to not just opening another location, but working with other restaurants and drawing a larger dining population to the area overall. I see the possibility of making it another ‘under-the-radar’ destination, much like what we have been a part of in Delaware.”

The menu will mirror that of Son Of Thurman in Delaware, and Thurman Café in German Village. Those restaurants have been operating since 2013 and 1942, respectively.
