Delaware’s native son Ezra Feivel Vogel passed away on Sunday in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

During his youth, Vogel assisted his father in his clothing store, the People’s Store in downtown Delaware. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1950, and subsequently obtained a PhD from Harvard University where he taught for over 20 years. His final position there was as the Henry Ford II Professor of the Social Sciences.

Vogel enjoyed a remarkable career in scholarship, often on the subjects of China, Japan, and the Far East, becoming recognized as one of the leading minds in the field, serving as a member of the National Intelligence Council for many years.

He remained connected to Delaware and OWU throughout his life. At one point, he endowed a lecture series to honor his parents.

Having received numerous honorary degrees, including from his undergraduate alma mater, he was a prolific author of important works in the field of East Asian studies.

In 2011, Vogel was interviewed by Charlie Rose, and that video can be viewed here.

Ezra Vogel was 90 years old at the time of his passing.
