This year we’re continuing our weekly look at unique events and attractions that are within an easy driving distance of Delaware County. We call these “Summer Road Trips.” Of course, we regularly feature the many extraordinary places to visit right here in Delaware County and encourage our readers to get out and experience what is on offer in our own backyard.

If you have never been to a presentation by The Actors’ Theatre at Schiller Park in Columbus’ German Village, you really will be in for a treat if you take this particular road trip. We at 1808Delaware have been there in years past, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The regular presentation of works of Shakespeare and other playwrights leads off this summer with an open air production of the great bard’s “Much Ado About Nothing.”

Adapted and directed by Philip J. Hickman and Cat McAlpine, too much time and too much wine finds a group of friends and an unlucky housekeeper trying to pass the time at an 1800s lake house. An ad hoc performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing keeps the estate lively as a summer evening grows dark. Together they discover love, laughs, and timing as the product of their boredom becomes a moving performance that reminds us all: the heart wants what it wants.

In a recent review of this production, the Columbus Dispatch said “Actors’ Theatre’s return to Schiller Park with witty “Much Ado” deserves applause, laughter.”

All performances are offered for FREE (donations accepted at intermission), or reserve a chair or blanket in advance. New for 2021 are premium boxes of 2 reserved zero-gravity chairs for $45, and basic boxes with a reserved ATC logo blanket (that you can keep after the show!) for $25. Reserve your boxes here.

Much Ado About Nothing runs through June 20 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights at 8 PM.
