The popularity of a special needs program at Olentangy Local Schools is necessitating an expansion of its current home.
At its February meeting, the Olentangy Board of Education heard from Director of Business Management and Facilities Jeff Gordon about a proposed increase in size for the Olentangy Academy building.
Several specialized programs are held in the building, such as the STEM Academy, Teacher Academy, and the Academy for Community Transition (ACT). However, the ACT program has outgrown its three assigned classrooms inside the building. To address this issue, the project aims to construct seven more classrooms, a spacious multi-purpose classroom, cater to the restroom requirements of ACT students, and avoid upgrading the current facility’s HVAC system. The cost of the proposed construction is $4,347,000, which will be funded through bond funds remaining from prior building projects.
The Olentangy Schools’ Academy for Community Transition (ACT) is intended to support students with special needs in preparing for life after graduation. This program is open to high school students who are currently enrolled in Specialized Learning Centers (SLC) and have met all academic prerequisites, finished four years of high school, and express a desire to participate in a post-secondary transition program that will prepare them for community employment or other adult programs.
The Olentangy Academy building is located at 7774 Graphics Way in Lewis Center.
