With the change toward warmer weather and better traveling conditions, events throughout Delaware County are rapidly moving into high gear. This includes programming at Perkins Observatory.

Perkins Observatory was founded in 1923 by Hiram Perkins, an Ohio Wesleyan University professor, and has since been operated by the university. The observatory’s main instrument is a 69-inch reflecting telescope, which was at one time the third-largest telescope in the world. It is currently used for research, education, and public outreach. The observatory also houses a smaller 32-inch telescope and a planetarium.

TELESCOPE WORKSHOPS

The observatory is offering a series of workshops through May to help participants become experienced telescope observers. The two-hour workshops will be offered at 7 PM on the second Thursday of the month. Workshop tickets are $30 per session. Reserve tickets by calling (740) 363-1257. Learn more at www.owu.edu/perkins.

  • APRIL 13 from 7 PM — 9 PM – “Binocular Basics – Using Binoculars to Augment Your Telescope Observing,” at Perkins Observatory.
  • MAY 11 from 7 PM — 9 PM – “Advanced Observing Techniques – Lunar, Deep Sky, and Solar Observing,” at Perkins Observatory.

GUEST NIGHTS

Content varies based on weather conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and stargazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 on the day of the event and at the door. Reserve tickets by calling (740) 363-1257. Learn more at owu.edu/perkins.
