Step back in time this holiday season at the Meeker Homestead, as the Delaware County Historical Society presents “Christmas at the Meeker Homestead – The Civil War Years: An Evening in Candlelight.” This festive event invites the community to bask in the warmth of 19th-century holiday traditions, surrounded by the glow of candlelight and the spirit of history.

The Meeker House will open its doors for two special evenings on December 12 and December 14 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Visitors will experience the house adorned in traditional holiday decor, offering a peek into the celebrations of yesteryear.

The air will be filled with the sounds of the season, emanating from an 1840’s square grand piano. Attendees will be treated to classic Christmas music, setting a soundtrack that complements the historical surroundings. In a rare treat, reenactors will breathe life into Civil War soldiers’ Christmas stories. These narratives will provide a poignant reminder of the season’s meaning during tumultuous times.

Brent Carson, a local historian, will captivate guests with a reading of the cherished holiday poem, “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” His storytelling is sure to kindle the festive spirit in the hearts of all present.

The evening also includes tours of “The Journey to Delaware County,” an award-winning exhibit that chronicles the rich tapestry of the area’s history.

To round off the evening, visitors can engage in parlor games once enjoyed by families over a century ago, providing a hands-on historical experience. No holiday gathering would be complete without refreshments. The society will offer holiday treats to guests, adding to the evening’s convivial atmosphere.

Admission to this enchanting event is complimentary, with the Historical Society suggesting donations of $5-$20 to support their continued efforts to enrich, educate, and entertain the community.
