The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) was recently awarded $2 million in funding through the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. The goal of the NEVI program is to provide grants to states and localities that require additional assistance to strategically deploy electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Electric Vehicle Charger Reliability and Accessibility Accelerator Funds from the NEVI Program may be used to repair existing, but non-operational, electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Central Ohio. MORPC staff will develop a competitive application process for eligible local public agencies located within MORPC’s member counties. The funding will be available for state fiscal years 2025–2026.
“We are excited that the FHWA is making this investment in the electric vehicle infrastructure within Central Ohio at such a pivotal time for the industry,” said MORPC Executive Director William Murdock. “These funds are critical to maintain and improve the EV infrastructure in our region as we plan for additional needs.”
The Biden-Harris administration has set a goal of building a convenient, affordable, reliable, equitable, and Made-in-America electric vehicle (EV) charging network along the nation’s highways and within communities. In alignment with this goal, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (“Bipartisan Infrastructure Law” or “BIL”), included the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program as the first major federal funding program that focuses on a nationwide deployment of EV charging infrastructure.
“MORPC and our regional partners have stepped up our efforts to drive investment back to our growing region,” said MORPC Senior Director of Government Affairs & Community Relations Joseph Garrity. “This funding is an example of our region working together to maintain and improve our existing electric vehicle infrastructure.”
MORPC will host a virtual workshop in the coming weeks to provide additional guidance on the application and selection process. Details about this event will be featured on www.morpc.org and via its digital media platforms.
