Community Engagement: Visitors and Public Input
Several community members took the opportunity to address the council. Pastor Jacob Heskett, the newly appointed pastor at Sunbury United Methodist Church, introduced himself and expressed his support for the council and the community. Enhancing Community Spaces and Events
The Parks Committee provided detailed updates on the Fourth of July celebrations, including the market opening, parade, kids’ zone, and fireworks. New park features, such as life-size yard games, were also discussed. The completion of a ramp at the floating fishing pier and the maintenance schedules for park trails were highlighted. Bright City Church was praised for their volunteer efforts in painting fences and laying mulch in town squares and parks.
Mr. Capple from the Events and Commemorations Committee shared updates on the approved Independence Day fireworks. The focus was on improving communication with event vendors regarding power options to reduce the need for noisy generators. The committee proposed creating a help guide for event planners to streamline future event planning processes.

The Planning and Zoning Commission reported on the approval of Hatachi Astemo’s building expansion to meet increasing production demands. Informal presentations on zoning and building plans were also discussed, with a comprehensive plan vote scheduled for the July meeting.
Deputy Chief Wade updated the council on the completion of paving at the police department and introduced George Holden as the new sergeant. A former Upper Arlington Police Department officer has also joined the team as a part-time officer. The council praised the efforts in the selection process and the setup of new furniture at the police facility.
City Administrator Hennessy provided updates on building demolitions, grant receipts, and the rapid growth in Sunbury, with new building permits up by 36% from the previous year. He commended the service team for their efforts in improving pedestrian safety along East Granville Street by clearing sidewalks and removing debris.
Legislative Actions and Future Plans
The council approved several resolutions and ordinances, including the organization of the Sunbury East New Community Authority, the annexation of land in Berkshire Township, and the establishment of a tax increment fund for public infrastructure improvements. Additionally, DLZ Inspection Services was authorized to oversee the 2024 street program, and Concrete One Construction was approved for sidewalk repairs in Sunbury Estates.
Discussions included minor revisions to Sunbury Memorial Park rules regarding weekend and holiday burials and the planned construction of a new BST&G fire station in Berkshire Township.
