Sunbury City Council’s latest meeting revealed a city in motion, with updates on development, construction, safety enhancements, and police operations. Below is a breakdown of key reports delivered by city staff and officials.

🚧 Engineering Momentum: Major Infrastructure Projects on the Move

Presented by: Carla Odebralski, P.E. – City Engineer

Kintner Commercial Development Moving Forward
The corner of Cheshire Road and SR36/37 is set for transformation. The proposed five-lot Kintner Commercial Development received conditional use approval for a gas station, and city staff will meet with developers on April 22 to finalize public improvement details, including the realignment of Cheshire Road.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Ready to Break Ground
With contracts signed, construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant expansion is officially set. A preconstruction meeting will take place April 28, paving the way for the vital utility upgrade.

Cheshire Road Lift Station Upgrades
Upgrades to the lift station—essential for meeting area growth—include dual pump and control panel replacements. Righter Company is recommended for the contract, while FeeCorp is currently cleaning and televising the sanitary pipe along Cheshire Ditch.

2025 Streets and Parking Improvements in Progress
Sunbury is combining the Columbus Street Parking Lot project with the city’s 2025 Street Improvement Program (SIP) to attract more contractors. Design plans should be ready by late April, with a construction contract award anticipated in May.

🚸 Safer Streets for Students: School Zone Signal Updates

Reported by: Daryl Hennessy (City Administrator) & Kaitlin Grafmiller (Assistant City Administrator)

A new school zone signal will soon be installed near Weatherby Drive to improve safety at the north entrance to the school zone. The signals will be relocated from Cheshire to Weatherby, approximately 200 feet from each entrance. Concrete foundations will be poured next week, followed by signal installation and pavement markings.

Additional signage and markings will be added to Buckeye Circle to alert outbound traffic and reinforce the school zone’s limits.

🚓 Police Department: Cruiser Delays and Training Plans

Police Report Summary

Cruiser Status Updates
Sunbury’s police fleet is undergoing a much-needed update, but progress has been slowed by parts delays and staffing shortages at Bullet Upfitting. However, recent meetings with suppliers show signs of improvement:

  • Cruiser #1: Scheduled for April 11 delivery — still pending.
  • Cruiser #2: In progress, expected within 10 days.
  • Cruiser #3: Due around May 2.
  • Cruiser #4: Projected completion May 16.
  • Cruiser #5: Target date is May 30.

Facility Improvements & Training

  • The front window seal at the station has been secured.
  • The department awaits replacement mop closet doors and overhead door seals to prevent water intrusion.
  • CPR certification courses are in the works and will be open to all city staff. Since current certifications are expiring, multiple sessions may be offered depending on interest.
