Halloween is almost here, and Delaware County communities have announced when little ghosts and superheroes will be making their rounds.
On Thursday, October 30, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Concord Township, Orange Township, and Shawnee Hills will hold their Trick-or-Treat nights.
On Friday, October 31, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, most other areas will join in, including Ashley, Delaware, Genoa Township, Liberty Township, Ostrander, Powell, and Sunbury. Berlin Township will open early from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, and Galena’s hours will run from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
As families prepare, the Delaware Public Health District reminds everyone to keep safety in mind. Stay home if you’re feeling sick, add reflective tape to costumes, carry a flashlight or glow sticks, and make sure costumes fit properly to avoid trips and falls. Discard any candy that looks suspicious, and drivers are urged to slow down through neighborhoods.
From Ancient Ritual to Candy Buckets
The tradition of trick-or-treating has roots reaching back more than 2,000 years. It evolved from ancient Celtic harvest festivals and early Christian observances into the candy-filled custom we know today.
Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their Halloween traditions to North America during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The phrase “trick or treat” first appeared in 1927 in an Alberta, Canada newspaper describing pranksters demanding sweets from neighbors.
The Cultural Transformation
After World War II, the tradition grew rapidly as suburban life spread and candy became widely available. By the 1950s, trick-or-treating had transformed into a family-centered celebration, helped along by advertisers, television specials, and candy companies. Homemade disguises gave way to store-bought costumes, and the emphasis shifted from mischief to community fun.
Today, trick-or-treating blends centuries of history—pagan ritual, Christian charity, and modern neighborhood tradition—into one of the most recognizable celebrations of the season.
