A local program which provides individualized, school-based mentoring for students in grades 5 through 12 has received funding through ServeOhio to support AmeriCorps members.

The AmeriCorps Mentors for Success, or AMS, is presented by the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio, and operates in Franklin, Delaware, Union, and Ross Counties. Students impacted by the program are those struggling with attendance and social-emotional skills.

Mentors build confidence and a feeling of connectively to schools, which assist in overcoming those obstacles, according to the program website.

The local award for 20 AmeriCorps members is $180,000.

Across Ohio, ServeOhio provided more than $8.8 million in grants to 900 AmeriCorps members for the 2020-2021 program year. Members earn a stipend as well as education awards which can be used to pay back student loans or to pay for future higher education expenses.
