Saturday plans do not have to mean choosing between getting outside, learning something new, helping a good cause, or simply spending time with the family. At Stratford Ecological Center, visitors can do a little of all four.
The Delaware County nonprofit is inviting the community to take part in its Second Saturday of the Month activities, with a lineup that stretches from early-morning yoga to farm chores, volunteer opportunities, trail walks, animal visits, and open exploration across the property.
Start The Day With Yoga On The Farm
The morning begins from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM with Yoga on the Farm, an outdoor session led by Stratford Associate Farmer Mariah. The class offers a quiet start to the day in the farm setting, combining movement and fresh air before the rest of Saturday’s activities get underway.
Roll Up Your Sleeves
Visitors looking to contribute some hands-on help can join Stratford’s Second Saturday Volunteer Day. Projects may include work in the greenhouse or removing invasive plants from the property. No previous experience is necessary. Volunteers should wear clothes they do not mind getting dirty, choose closed-toe shoes, and arrive ready to learn.
It is a chance to do practical work while getting a closer look at the ongoing care behind Stratford’s farm and natural areas.
See What Farm Life Really Takes
For families, the day also includes Family Farm Chores, a behind-the-scenes experience built around the real daily work of the farm. Participants may help feed animals, fill water buckets, gather and wash eggs, and water the garden. The program offers children and adults a hands-on introduction to the seasonal rhythms of a working farm. Online registration is required for Family Farm Chores.
Wander The Trails And Meet Skunk
From 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Stratford will also offer open visiting hours. Guests can explore the farm, hike nature trails, meet the animals, and take in the property at their own pace. There is also a particularly small new resident drawing attention: Skunk, Stratford’s newest baby goat.
Pollinator Palooza Brings Extra Buzz
Stratford is also hosting a special family program, Pollinator Palooza, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on June 27. The free, donation-based event celebrates Pollinator Week and the creatures that help gardens, farms, and natural spaces thrive.
Families can hear a bee talk from local beekeeper Louis Iverson, take part in a Native Pollinator BioBlitz, and head into the prairie for a kid-friendly “I Spy” Pollinator Hike.
Along the way, participants will learn more about the wide range of pollinators found in the area, including bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, and other species that play essential roles in local ecosystems.
The event is designed for both longtime nature enthusiasts and families simply curious about the buzzing, fluttering visitors found in backyards and gardens. Admission is free, with donations appreciated but not required. Walk-ins are welcome, although advance RSVP is strongly encouraged.
