Food trucks have long brought more than meals to Dublin. They add movement to public spaces, create informal gathering places and give residents, workers and visitors another reason to stop and stay awhile. Now, the City of Dublin is putting a more formal structure around where those trucks can operate and how vendors can reserve public locations.
A new food truck pilot began July 9 and will continue through March 1, 2027, giving the City several months to evaluate designated locations, operating procedures and community feedback before a permanent municipal licensing requirement takes effect.
Twelve Places To Pull Up
Under the new system, food trucks serving customers in public spaces must operate within one of 12 designated food truck parking zones. The locations were selected with traffic flow, pedestrian access, parking availability and surrounding businesses in mind. Two of the approved spaces have two-hour parking restrictions, which are identified through the Street Food Finder reservation platform.
Rather than simply arriving and setting up, operators participating in the pilot must reserve available locations through the portal. Vendors can apply to join the “City of Dublin Parks and Roadways” group by submitting an active Ohio Food Service Operations License and proof of current insurance coverage. The documents will be reviewed by a City designee before an operator is approved to reserve a site.
A Trial Run Before Licensing Begins
Food truck operators will not be required to obtain a City of Dublin license during the pilot period, and the City will not charge a food truck licensing fee during that time. Operators will, however, be asked to provide a valid Food Service Operations License with their first request to reserve a designated parking zone.
The City expects its own food truck licensing requirement to begin March 1, 2027. At that point, operators will need to submit documentation showing that they are authorized and prepared to operate safely and legally in Dublin. Each individual food truck will require its own application.
The eventual cost of the City license has not yet been determined. City Council is expected to consider that question after officials have had an opportunity to evaluate the pilot.
Hours, Events And Private Property
Food trucks will generally be permitted to operate between 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM. They may also participate in City-approved events when invited by an event organizer and included within the event’s approved area and operating schedule. Trucks that are not part of an approved event may not operate within 1,000 feet of it. Businesses may host food trucks on private property and allow them to serve the public, subject to applicable City licensing and operating requirements.
Food trucks may also serve private gatherings, including graduation parties and neighborhood events, with the property owner’s permission. In those situations, service must remain limited to invited guests rather than being opened to the surrounding public.
More Than A Parking Question
The ordinance addresses more than where a truck may stop. Operators are expected to follow requirements involving equipment, signage, waste disposal, parking, water and power sources, neighborhood operations and private-property events. Food trucks may not connect to City, business or private power or water supplies unless they have written permission from the party responsible for that utility source.
The broader goal is to create a predictable citywide process while preserving the flexibility and energy that make food trucks popular in the first place.
