The “Good Deeds Team,” a trio of Delaware County officials, is set to host a series of workshops at local high schools later this month. The team—Recorder Melissa Jordan, Clerk of the Courts Natalie Fravel, and Probate Judge David Hejmanowski—first joined forces in 2018 to help residents better understand how to manage their assets and navigate the often complex legal landscape related to property, vehicles, and probate.

The workshops aim to provide practical, easy-to-understand guidance on three key areas:

  1. Real Property Management
  2. Titled Vehicles
  3. Probate Court Navigation

By focusing on these topics, the Good Deeds Team hopes to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to avoid costly and time-consuming probate processes, especially when it comes to managing titled vehicles and real estate assets.

Upcoming High School Events

The team will conduct two events this month, partnering with Westerville Central and Big Walnut High Schools:

  • Tuesday, October 29, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
    • Location: Westerville Central High School, 7118 Mt. Royal Ave., Westerville
  • Wednesday, October 30, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
    • Location: Big Walnut High School, 713 N. Miller Drive, Sunbury

Attendees must RSVP by October 28 to Recorder Melissa Jordan via email at [email protected]. The subject line should include the event date and location, while the body should list the names of attendees.

The Impact of Good Deeds

The Good Deeds initiative has grown since its inception, extending beyond Delaware County to elected officials across Ohio. The team has partnered with groups like SourcePoint and the Unity Community Center to expand outreach efforts, emphasizing accessibility and proactive planning.

Recorder Melissa Jordan explains, “Good Deeds is good government. We want to improve access to the offices the residents’ tax dollars fund while providing a tangible, real benefit.” The workshops offer insights into avoiding probate, especially regarding titled vehicles. Fravel notes, “Most people are surprised to learn they might have to go through the probate process over their titled vehicles.” These workshops cover the necessary steps to sidestep this often-overlooked challenge.

Simple Planning for a Better Future

Judge Hejmanowski, a key voice in the workshops, highlights the importance of early planning: “If we can simply encourage people to do simple, relatively inexpensive planning during their lifetime, then they will make the task supremely easier for their loved ones after they’re gone.”
