The City of Delaware is preparing for the season’s first winter storm, which is expected to bring freezing rain and snow Sunday, followed by a significant temperature drop into the teens. The Public Works Department has outlined its snow and ice management strategy and issued important reminders for residents to stay safe during and after the storm.
Snow and Ice Management Plan
The City’s Public Works Department has a detailed plan to address snow and ice to ensure the safety of all residents:
- Pre-Treatment of Roads: Crews are pretreating streets with brine today and Sunday. This treatment helps prevent snow and ice from bonding to the roads, making plowing more effective.
- 24/7 Crews During Storm: Starting Sunday, crews will work in 12-hour shifts around the clock to clear roads. Priority 1 and 2 routes, such as main roads and collectors, will receive the earliest attention. Residential streets (Priority 3) will be cleared once main roads are addressed, focusing on neighborhoods scheduled for refuse collection.
- Bike Paths and Parking Lots: Separate crews from the Parks and Natural Resources Department will clear public bikeways, pedestrian paths, and parking lots using specialized equipment.
Potential Delays for Refuse Collection
Monday’s refuse collection may face delays due to road conditions. Updates will be provided on the City’s website and social media pages.
How Residents Can Help
Residents are urged to take the following steps to assist snow management efforts:
- Move Parked Cars: Keep vehicles off the streets to provide full access for plows.
- Clear Sidewalks: Ensure sidewalks are cleared promptly after the snow stops to provide safe passage for pedestrians.
- Avoid Shoveling Snow Into Streets: Shoveling or blowing snow from driveways into the road can hinder plowing efforts.
- Mailbox Clearance: Ensure mailboxes are set back at least six inches from the curb to avoid damage during plowing.
- Protect Pets: Keep pets away from brine-treated roads, as prolonged exposure can cause frostbite to their paws.
Safety Reminders for Drivers
- Never pass a snowplow truck moving in the same direction while it is actively plowing.
- Be cautious on roads treated with brine, as standing water can refreeze in low temperatures.
Reporting Issues and Ordinance Enforcement
For questions or to report issues with snow and ice management, residents can contact Public Works at 740-203-1810 or email them. The City of Delaware enforces Ordinance 521.06, which prohibits property owners from allowing snow and ice to accumulate on sidewalks. Violations can be reported to Code Enforcement at 740-203-1600.
