A regular trip to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium centers on the habitats visitors can see. A separate menu of small-group tours opens doors to some of the care, training, and conservation work that happens beyond them.

The Delaware County attraction highlighted its fall and winter experiences in an October 8 guide. The zoo says many tours are 40 percent off when booked for Monday through Thursday through December 31. The important word is “many.” Eligible dates and final prices vary by experience, so visitors should check the individual listing and checkout screen before making plans. Care And Conservation Indoors

The Animal Wellness Experience takes visitors behind the scenes at the Animal Health Center, where an Education team member explains how the Conservation Medicine and Animal Care teams work together. The one-hour tour also includes an animal training demonstration, although the species available can vary. The listed base price is $99 per person, and guests must be at least 10 years old. The current tour page shows an 11:00 AM start through November 18 and a 3:00 PM start from November 19 through January 3. Its weekday discount is specifically listed through November 18. Review the Animal Wellness schedule and requirements.

The Manatee Conservation Center Tour offers another indoor option. It focuses on rehabilitation and the specialized care provided to manatees and other animals in the center.

The hourlong tour costs $109 before any eligible discount and is open to guests age 10 and older. It is scheduled at 1:30 PM on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays through January 3. Its listing also limits the weekday discount to dates through November 18. See the Manatee Conservation Center Tour details.

A Closer Look At The Elephant Herd

The Baby Elephant Experience is a more expensive and tightly limited option. The 45-minute program is listed at $249 per person and is restricted to guests age 12 and older.

Participants observe how the care team trains and works with one elephant calf and its mother. The pair rotates, and guests cannot choose which animals they will see. The zoo also restricts personal photography during the experience, although a staff member may assist with a group photo when animal-care staff determine it is safe.

The current schedule lists tours on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 10:30 AM through November 18, then at 1:30 PM from November 19 through January 3. The individual page does not advertise the 40 percent weekday offer, another reason to check each listing rather than assume every experience is discounted. Read the Baby Elephant Experience rules.

The Fine Print Matters

Most animal experiences require a separate zoo admission that is not included in the tour price. Reservations generally must be made at least two days in advance, minors must be accompanied by a paying adult, and cancellations within 48 hours usually are not refundable. Accessibility also varies. The manatee tour includes stairs and wet floors and is not listed as ADA accessible. The zoo asks guests who need accommodations for some other experiences to call before booking. Age limits, group sizes, photography rules, and service-animal restrictions also differ.

The complete Tours and Experiences directory is the best starting point. The fall discount can make a special experience less costly, but the base prices remain substantial and the requirements deserve as much attention as the animals.
