The outstanding work done with care of animals at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has resulted in the receipt of an award for one of its leaders.

Dr. Jan Ramer, Senior Vice President of Animal Care and Conservation at the Zoo and also at The Wilds, was recently awarded the prestigious Emil Dolansek Award, the Zoo announced on social media. The Award recognized her contributions to the conservation, care, and understanding of zoo and free-ranging wildlife.

According to the website of the American American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), the selection philosophy for the award is as follows: “The Emil Dolensek Award is an honor presented to a past or present member of the AAZV in appreciation for exceptional contributions to the conservation, care, and understanding of zoo and free-ranging wildlife reflecting Emil Dolensek’s commitment to these purposes.

Emil was in the prime of his life and his career, and this award recognizes similar individuals that have advanced the profession and served to link the related disciplines of zoo and wildlife medicine.”

This award is usually given every year. It was given at the organization’s recent conference in Houston.

The mission of the AAZV is to empower members to advance our profession and enhance wild animal health, welfare, and conservation. The group has over 1000 members.
