Thursday marked a day which demographers and politicians both dread and love — the day that US Census figures were released for states, counties, and incorporated areas. In this case, those were official numbers for the 2020 Census.
For Delaware County, the figures confirmed what estimates had suggested over the last ten years – growth was substantial and led the pack among Ohio counties.
Delaware County’s population stands at 214,124, a whopping 23% above the 2010 figure of 174,214. Other Ohio counties in the top six statewide for growth rates included next door neighbors Union (20%) and Franklin (14%), as well as Warren, Fairfield, and Licking. Two-thirds of Ohio counties lost population.
As a whole, Ohio’s population grew by over 260,000.
As for metropolitan areas, Columbus and Cincinnati saw gains while Akron, Cleveland, Toledo, Youngstown, and Dayton shrank in size. Columbus’ population is nearing the one million mark, standing at 905,748.
The Census officially heralded Sunbury’s new city status, passing the required 5,000 mark with a 2020 population of 6,614. This represented a growth rate of over 50%. The city of Delaware’s 19% rise put it at 41,302.
Individual cities and villages in Delaware County had the following Census counts:
