The April 21 meeting of the Delaware County Board of Commissioners opened with patriotic unity as Bob Anderson, Director of Job and Family Services, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Routine resolutions quickly passed, approving past meeting records, financial authorizations, and a liquor license request for Lehner’s Pumpkin Farm.

Celebrating a Pillar of the Community: Bob Weiler Turns 90

A highlight of the meeting was a heartfelt resolution honoring Robert Weiler Jr. on his 90th birthday. Commissioners praised Weiler as a quiet yet monumental force in Delaware County’s economic and philanthropic development. Known for spearheading major developments like Polaris and Northstar, the Weiler family’s influence contributes millions annually in sales tax revenue and has created employment hubs and landmark attractions like Top Golf.

The Commissioners recalled Weiler’s deep roots in both business and civic life—from chairing the Columbus Public Schools Foundation to supporting countless causes, often behind the scenes. “They aren’t in it for the publicity,” one Commissioner noted. “They just really care about the community.”

Protecting Children and Supporting Families: Child Abuse Prevention Month

In a sobering yet hopeful segment, the board proclaimed April 2025 as Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month. Joined by staff from Protective Services, Bob Anderson of JFS shared impactful statistics: 2,234 reports of abuse or neglect were received in 2024, yet only 22 families required ongoing services—reflecting the county’s proactive approach to family support.

Case workers were publicly thanked for their unseen but essential efforts, and the Commissioners lauded the department for helping children stay with families or kinship placements, avoiding institutional custody when possible.

Elections Team Introduces New Deputy Director

The meeting also featured an introduction of Brian Hester, the new Deputy Director of the Delaware County Board of Elections. A legal and policy veteran from Butler County, Hester brings a decade of bipartisan experience to Delaware.

With early voting underway for the May primary, Hester explained the election includes a statewide bond issue renewal for infrastructure, fire levies in Liberty and Genoa Townships, and a notable Democratic primary. He emphasized that most costs for this election will be covered by the state, easing the financial burden on local jurisdictions.

Infrastructure Investments and Safety Upgrades

The board approved several key infrastructure projects, including:

  • Culvert installation in Concord and Oxford Townships (Double Z Construction awarded contract).
  • Guardrail replacements along Old State Road, supported by a federal grant covering 50% of costs.

Commissioners noted these projects enhance road safety and preserve Delaware County’s reputation for well-maintained, heavily traveled roads.

Community and Commemoration: Looking Toward 2026

Administrator Tracy Davies highlighted a recent community event marking the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s Ride, featuring local historian Brent Carson. As part of America 250 celebrations, the Commissioners also announced the planting of a white oak tree at the Byxbe Campus—a symbolic gesture of remembrance and future growth.

Personal News and Upcoming Engagements

Commissioner Merrill proudly introduced a new family member—Georgia, an adorable six-pound puppy—and expressed excitement about upcoming legislative meetings, peace officer graduations, and a five-year planning session in Knox County.

Commissioners also acknowledged the vital role of the 911 dispatch team, having recently visited the center and shared lunch with staff in appreciation of their 24/7 service.
