The Friends of Delaware County District Library, in collaboration with Preservation Parks of Delaware County, are thrilled to host renowned naturalist and Ohio birding legend Kenn Kaufman for a two-day event on October 17 and October 18. This unique opportunity brings one of the most respected figures in birding to Powell, offering a chance for the community to engage with his insights and expertise.
Evening with Kenn Kaufman: A Book Discussion and Signing
On Thursday, October 17 at 6:30 PM, Kaufman will present his latest work, “The Birds That Audubon Missed,” at the Liberty Branch of Delaware County District Library. This event will include an engaging discussion about the often-overlooked birds that John James Audubon did not feature in his iconic illustrations. Kaufman will delve into the rich history and unique characteristics of these species, highlighting his passion for the lesser-known aspects of birding. Following the talk, there will be a book signing, providing attendees with the chance to meet Kaufman personally and have their copies of his new book autographed.

Kenn Kaufman: A Lifetime of Birding Excellence
Kenn Kaufman is not just a naturalist; he’s a legend in the world of birding. With a career spanning decades, Kaufman is best known for his work on field guides that make the wonders of nature accessible to all. His love for birding started at an early age, and by the time he was sixteen, Kaufman was traveling across North America, chasing bird species and documenting his experiences—a journey that he later chronicled in his memoir, “Kingbird Highway.”
Kaufman’s contributions to the field include the acclaimed Kaufman Field Guides series, which cover birds, butterflies, mammals, and insects. His first guide, “A Field Guide to Advanced Birding,” published in 1990, set a new standard in the field with its innovative design and user-friendly approach, making it a favorite among both novice and experienced birders.
A Legacy of Conservation and Education
Throughout his illustrious career, Kaufman has received numerous awards recognizing his impact on birding and conservation. He was honored with the Ludlow Griscom Award from the American Birding Association in 1992 and the Roger Tory Peterson Award in 2008 for his lifetime achievements in promoting birding. Kaufman is also a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society, a testament to his significant contributions to ornithology and conservation.
Currently residing in Oak Harbor, Ohio, Kaufman and his wife Kimberly are actively involved in nature conservation and birding education. The couple co-author field guides and contribute to “Birds & Blooms” magazine, sharing their extensive knowledge and passion with a broader audience. Their work with the Black Swamp Bird Observatory further emphasizes their commitment to promoting birding as both a science and a hobby.
